When interviewing large companies and prestigious firms, a background check is very often done. In other words, it is a verification of the biographical data of a person. Employers are not interested in their employees having criminal records or being fired from their previous job because of parasitism.

Checking the biography of an employee is a mandatory step in conducting an interview in Western companies and in the Far East. There can be several applicants for one prestigious vacancy, but there is only one place. That is why the HR department of the company must find out whether the candidate is suitable for the chosen position in all respects, including an impeccable reputation.

The Main Types of a Background Check

Background check most often consists of checking information and references from past jobs. In addition, the background report can cover the following aspects:

  • Information check of reputation and past jobs;
  • Checking criminal information;
  • Universal background check;
  • Checking credit and banking history;
  • Verification of biography and personal information;
  • Checking licenses.

Employment Background Check

When applying for a job, employers have every right to check information from past jobs, reputation and basic biographical records. According to HR.com, 96% of employers carry out biographical checks upon hiring.

Job background checks are usually done prior to the interview. However, many employers conduct biographical background checks on all candidates for a more accurate selection. An employer may require its employees to have an annual or semi-annual drug testing, criminal background check. All of these measures are taken to create a safe and secure workplace.

Background checks include information and public records search from the past seven years, although some states in the United States allow checks from the past 10 years. It is recommended to clarify the information on the date of verification in the personnel department of the company of interest.

Job screening can include recent jobs, education, credit history, car reports, criminal convictions, medical records, social media profiles, and drug checks.

If the vacancy is highly specialized, candidates and employees may undergo additional screening. For example, if someone applies for the position of a bank manager, the company has every right to check the entire credit history of the candidate, certificates from the place of study and real estate or movable property records.

It is illegal to verify data based on race, national origin, color, religion, disability, genetic information or age of the applicant.

Background Check Methods

Modern companies use biography search not only during hiring. Through careful selection of candidates, companies get the opportunity to increase their productivity, and in this case, they don’t need criminals or parasites.

Most often, biography searches are carried out using the following methods:

  • Use of specialized online services. Due to the functionality and prevalence of various services for finding people, using the name, phone number and other personal data, you can find a lot of personal information;
  • Personal connections in law enforcement. Many high-profile companies notify employees that they will be checking their bio. In this case, the personnel department of large companies may well ask for the help of lawyers or acquaintances of private detectives - they will be able to find the biographical data of the applicant in no time;
  • Special agencies. Today, quite a few agencies in the world provide services to search for information about people, including missing persons, relatives and friends. They can also use their own resources and tools to check the biography of applicants.
